The bringing of contributions to the Lord goes all the way back to Cain and Abel (Gen. 4:3-7). Abram gave a tenth to Melchizedek, a minister of God (Gen. 14:20). God expects His people to bring tithes and offerings for the support of the minister (1 Tim. 5:17-18), the distribution of material goods to those in need (Acts 6:1-6), and as a recognition that all we have comes from the hand of God (Rom. 11:36; Mal. 3:6-10). Giving is to be done cheerfully (2 Cor. 9:7) and on the day when the Church assembles (1 Cor. 16:2).
