Scripture Reading
In both the Old and New Testaments, Scripture reading is a part of the worship of the people of God. Nehemiah 8 describes Ezra reading from Scripture for several hours to the assembled people of God. Paul urges Timothy to devote himself “to the public reading of Scripture” (1 Tim. 4:13). The Spirit of God makes the hearing of God’s Word effectual in the hearts and lives of His people.
Scripture Preaching
Also in Nehemiah 8, not only did Ezra read the Scripture but he and the priests made the meaning of the Scriptures plain and understandable to the assembled people. Paul told Timothy to use the Scriptures to exhort and to teach the people of God (1 Tim. 4:13). The office of preacher/teacher was given to the Church to equip believers for Christian ministry (Ephesians 4:11-12). It is through the preaching of the Gospel [the good news of Jesus Christ] that God saves sinners (Rom. 1:16-17).
